Thoughtful planning created a financially secure present for themselves and others

Thoughtful planning created a financially secure present for themselves and others

For Rex and Janet Elder, life at The Tamalpais was more than a time to enjoy the fruits of hard work and careful planning. It was also an opportunity to create their legacy.

The Elders moved to The Tamalpais in 1995, while Rex was still consulting after retiring from his career as the head of hydraulic engineering with Bechtel Corporation. Thanks to Rex's work as an engineering consultant, Rex and Janet traveled around the world together. Rex and Janet planned well to ensure that their retirement years at The Tamalpais would be just as active and fulfilling. Besides planning for their own futures, the couple wanted to give a planned gift that would make a difference in the lives of others. They chose to give a gift using both a charitable gift annuity and charitable remainder trust in support of The Tamalpais's Tomorrow Fund. Through their gift, Janet and Rex helped provide Tamalpais residents who have outlived their financial resources with a secure safety net.

Over the years, Rex also showed his gratitude to the Tamalpais for the level of care Janet received when she needed it most. Rex gave charitable gifts through Senior Services for Northern California which provided for new skilled nursing equipment and other medical needs at The Tamalpais.

Although Janet passed away in 2006 and Rex in 2018, their legacy of generosity and compassion lives on. Through their thoughtful and generous planning, the Elders illustrate that it is indeed possible to live well, plan for future hurdles, and create a legacy of care for others through philanthropy.
